Experiencing Nature in McKinney, Texas
I had not had the opportunity to explore the community, and its attractions since moving to McKinney couple of months ago. Today after a stressful day at school I decided to take a break and go out in the evening to spend some time outdoors. I went to the Town Lake recreation area located right beside the Central Expressway. There is a short nature trail through a wooded patch that stretches along the gurgling Wilson Creek and a fairly wide paved bike, walk trail that meanders around the lake.
I went to walk the Nature Trail first through the trees treading on the soft soil. The only differences this trail has with trails in India that I miss so much is its flat terrain and the wooden decks/ bridges when we cross creeks. This trail passes through a wooded patch with tall trees. The trees must be at least several decades old because each one of them are at least 50 ft tall.
Nature has always had a soothing effect on me and when I am amidst nature I feel so humbled. We human beings have created so many things out of the raw material that nature provides to us. Plain water, mud, and sunlight is all it takes to enable plants to provide fantastically tasty food for our consumption. Today as I walked through the tall trees bathed in the soft evening sunlight I felt very minuscule. Whatever ego I had melted away and for the next few minutes that I was traversing the trail I felt as if all my worries and problems were nothing compared to what obstacles the trees, plants, birds and other beings had to endure just to live.
I came out of the nature trail rejuvenated and feeling fresh to take on the world today and tomorrow, when I go back to working from 7am to 7pm and driving an hour to work and back. Indeed nature has so many lessons to offer if only one were to pause and learn....

Smart, Business Savvy, But Unaware or Callous???
I continue to blog about the gross injustice the western world is inflicting on easterners... particularly people from India. First when people in the US or Europe say "Asian" or "Asia" they mean "China". This is a recent phenomenon since the west began to access cheap goods produced by slave labor in China.
What I am blogging today is about a greater and more historical injustice that continues to go unnoticed in the greater consciousness of the entire Western world and almost everyone in the Eastern world also. This is the identity mistake that has endured since the past 500 years and has not been corrected despite the arrival of the internet that has ushered in the information age and created knowledge explosion.
Yes I am talking about the identity label of "Indian" being hijacked by people of "Native American" tribes. Today I listened to a radio program titled "Smiling Indians" on NPR. Quite predictably this program spoke about the Native Americans or the original inhabitants of continental America, most of whom were massacred by the European settlers when they started colonizing this continent.
Well I understand that Christopher Columbus was totally mistaken when he landed here and discovered the new world for Europeans to exploit and conquer. But isn't it high time for the world to recognize that these people are not "Indians" but are whatever nations they profess to belong to.
I am amazed by the fact that these "Native Americans" are also not standing up to claim their true national/ tribal identity and are piggybacking on the "Indian" identity label. How much longer will they remain oblivious of their own roots and compromise their ethnic identity for the collective label often used in a derogatory sense: "Indian".
I am totally shocked that the fairly influential and large Indian diaspora living in the US since the past several decades have quietly accepted the title of "East Indians" and allowed their true identity to be pegged on to the Tribals of America. I wonder when these people: Indians and Native Americans will get educated and start labeling themselves correctly.
I hope this happens in my lifetime.... or is it too much to hope for???

Homelessness, a problem in America also...
I listened to this story on NPR this morning while driving to school. According to the reporter there are over 650,000 homeless people in the US. That is almost 0.2% of the total population. My first reaction was that of shock and surprise. How can there be homeless people in the world’s richest nation? What is going on with this country which controls the world's economy; dictates who has the right to have weapons and who doesn't; provides billions of $s of aid to poor nations across the world; hands out arms and weapons to militias in third world nations to create the likes of Taliban and Al-Qaeda?
Housing these people wouldn't take even a fraction of the money that is being spent on these programs. It is apparent that most of these homeless people are those who refuse to conform to the rules of the capitalist economy and materialistic society of America. I don't know whether these people are out there on the street abusing drugs, and other illicit substances out of their own will or have been forced out of their homes by unscrupulous mortgage and loan brokers.
Anyway bottom line, if America doesn't pull its act together and get these people off the streets there will be a big problem pretty soon in the future.

Hindu Pride.... Abysmally low....
Throughout my short life I have come across people of many religions. What makes everyone different from people of Hindu faith is the pride of followers or lack thereof. I have come across very few Hindus who are proud of their religious identity... more so if they are from India or those born in the United States. This is ironical because everything that has come from Hinduism is trendy, cool and sought after in the United States. Even in the so-called Bible belt of US Yoga is popular, meditation is trendy, Kirtan, chanting of Sanskrit mantras are popular.
When it comes to identifying oneself as a Hindu, there is a huge gap. People from India would rather identify themselves by their regional, linguistic, national, or caste identity rather than their larger religious identity. This is perhaps why even Europeans who have gotten attracted to Hinduism's philosophy are hesitant to say they are Hindus but say they like "Eastern Philosophies" better than "Western ideologies".
I wonder when Hindus will start taking pride in their religious identity?

A thin font created by me...
Font creation is a great way to play with your design sense. It is not about one letter but about the entire alphabet and related punctuation marks. It is not good enough to have a great sense of design to create a font, but one needs to have forethought, and a sense of organization to be able to conceive the entire alphabet and create the font.
I will continue to work on more fonts and share them right here on my blog.

Font Creations....
I tried a hand at font construction again and here is another examples of what I conceived to be complete fonts with 98 characters including numbers, punctuations and special ascii characters. If you wish to download the font and use it on your computer go ahead and enjoy... just make sure you give me your feedback...

One Week Later.....
In the US people always say one thing: "Life Happens". This is to explain sudden and unexpected happenings which change the course of people's lives. Well nothing of that sort has happened in the past week in my life. But then I use this term to explain why I have not been doing things that I routinely do... like blogging.
School and work have been taking up so much of my time that I haven't spent any time on the internet for a while. Now today I have this opportunity window and hence here I am. Will be back in a bit to post more..

Ensure Your Unborn Child's Health
This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of CryoCell International. All opinions are 100% mine.
When you are pregnant the top priority of everyone concerned is to protect you, your baby and ensure a comfortable and safe birth. Medical science has come a long way and most of the problems faced by women during birth have been solved. Over the years scientists have researched on stem cell and they have discovered that the umbilical blood is a rich source of stem cells. I recently came across www.Cryo-Cell.com a bank for umbilical cord blood, where you can save your baby's blood for future use. This umbilical blood can be preserved in a blood bank and used later to treat diseases. It is as good and sometimes better than bone marrow because of several reasons.
Primarily because umbilical cord blood stem cell extraction is easy and pain and risk free for both the mother and the baby. Contrastingly bone marrow collection is an invasive procedure and requires anesthesia and is a very risky procedure. Another distinct advantage is cord blood stem cells have a higher rate of engraftment i.e. body accepts cord blood stem cells better and easier. The promoters of www.Cryo-Cell.net have made it so convenient that once you store your baby's cord blood you don't need to incur any cost to retrieve the stored stem cells for a transplant in the future.
I would advise all pregnant women to explore this option and see if it is good for you and your baby.
Proud to be an "Indian"!
In my three years of living in the US I have come across people from several nationalities, cultures, and ethnic groups. One thing I have noticed is that the people who are the most proud to be "Indian" or "part Indian" are not people from the great nation of India. In fact they are not even remotely connected by family or heritage ties to the nation of India. Can you guess who these people are and why they are claiming to be "Indian"?
Yeah, you guessed it right. These are "White People" or "Euro Americans". I have come across several of these people who are "as white as they get" and they say "I'm 1/8th Cherokee Indian" or "My great-grand father was Navajo Indian," or "I have some Indian ancestry," etc. When I hear such comments I wonder about the rationale of their observations. Knowledge, Education, and technology has connected the world and made it a global village, but have failed in correcting the gross historical mistake in the consciousness of the Euro-Americans... including the Spanish-Americans. When I say Americans here I am talking about the Citizens of all nations of both North and South America.
History is evidence to the fact that Christopher Columbus set out looking for a route to India and thanks to pathetic navigation skills he landed in South America instead of India. The people he saw there he thought they were Indians because he was sure that he reached India. We all know this but over the past five hundred years people have become aware of the stupidity of Columbus, but they haven't felt the need to correct the historical mistake. This includes common people, highly educated academics, government officials, and the people affected.
There are two distinct groups of people who are affected by this false nomenclature or identity tagging. The first of course is the "Native American" or "First Nations" peoples who have their own distinct tribal/ national identity of being a "Cherokee", "Choctaw", "Navajo" or whatever which is completely lost under the common umbrella of "Indian" or "American Indian". Second group which is affected to a greater extent is the real Indians, i.e. people from the world's most spiritually advanced Nation of India. We have been unnecessarily branded as tribal with no refined culture, science, education or nationality by getting equated to these "Native Americans".
It is surprising that there has not been any organized movement from either groups to correct the historical blunder. The Native American people seem comfortable with the identity label of "Indian", as evidenced by the names of their organizations such as "American Indian Chamber of Commerce" "Bureau of Indian Affairs" etc. The people of India are so naive that they don't mind sharing their ethnic identity label with anyone and everyone in the world even if it means accepting a derogatory name, listening to insulting comments and having their ethnicity challenged.
The people who made the mistake don't care because they can't admit that their ancestors were at fault. It hurts their ego. Also by branding people from India as tribal they can assert their own Euro-Supremacist identity and attitude.
I wonder why everyone is silent to this historical blunder. I don't expect anything from academics because they have always historically been involved in finding ways and means to brand India as a nation full of tribal, superstitious, stupid, slave-like peoples. But I am appalled by the way Native Americans have let this identity label be applied to them even in this age of awareness. I wonder why they have not asserted their own national identity. They can stress that their heritage is "Cherokee, Navajo, Apache, Comanche,... etc" instead of adding the "Indian" suffix to their nation's name. By doing so they are actually diluting their own national pride and respect to their nation. People from India, their complacence in handling issues of national identity, civilization pride and respect make me wonder.
I believe that it is high time everyone stepped in to correct this historical blunder and stop being stupid. Teachers, academia, government, media, and most importantly the people should resolve these identity conflicts so everyone can be at peace and not confused.

Back to Snow....
Today we are back in the business of staying at home because everything is closed in the North Texas area due to a "Blizzard". Radio stations are abuzz with news about winter storm, schools are closed and kids get to stay at home. I had early classes and went to college without waiting till the last moment to leave home only to come back disappointed that campus was closed.
Yesterday at class my professor who is from New York said he is used to this kind of weather for eight months a year. So it is good that there are only a few snow days in Dallas. For those like me from a tropical place it is too much because we are used to winters without any snow.

Taking Pride in Work
Finally it is starting to get a little sunny after a week of snow, ice, sleet and biting cold in the Dallas area, Texas. Not that I am looking forward to the 100 degree days of summer but I don't enjoy the iced out days of winder when temperatures plunge to 15-16 below freezing.
Recently we went out to dinner at iHop coz it was too late and no Indian place would be open. I met a waiter who really took pride in his work. Things as little and insignificant as coffee creamers were neatly arranged in a formation inside a small cup. I haven't come across this kind of attention to detail in any other restaurant. Presentation is half the marketing when it comes to food products. Even the most sought after dish could make a person anorexic if it is presented in a shoddy manner. This experience at iHop only confirmed it. It is simply customer support/ service and building a loyal client base.

Tobasco Original Red adding flavor to every meal
This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of TABASCO® Original Red. All opinions are 100% mine.
I discovered Tobasco Original Red when I moved to the United States about 3 years ago. I am from India where food is very spicy and flavorful and it was quite a change in this country. My initial days in the US were quite difficult in all aspects, but specially so with regard food. Then I discovered Tobasco in a Mexican restaurant and since then I have been a big fan of the TABASCO® Original Red.
I have used Tobasco with a wide array of food, rice, burritos, tacos, pizza, sandwich, as an adjunct with mild salsa to make it hot. I have added Tobasco to rice and vegetables to make it spicy and flavorful. One of the occasions I particularly remember using Tobasco was during last year's super bowl. Tobasco original red was an integral part of the Game-Day Party Menu and needless to say every guest at the party was thrilled with the different flavor the food had. Some even added more Tobasco because they thought that what I added to the food was not enough.
Recently I was eating pizza at home and was feeling that it lacked the spice that I so much love. So I just went to the pantry opened up a new bottle of Tobasco Original Red and seasoned the pizza with it. Voila! I had the Pizza Perfected to my personal liking. My family members sharing the pizza meal with me tried and liked the combination too.
I simply have one thing to say about Tobasco. Food just doesn't taste the same without it.

A week of ice and snow....
It has been a week of being weathered indoors... Texas is a state that doesn't normally get so much snow fall/ ice/ sleet. Texas is rather more famous for tornadoes and thunderstorms. Ever since I landed in Texas every year that has been incremental snowfall. The first year it was one day, the second it was three days and this year it is like two separate episodes of snow and this time it has been a full five days of snow and ice. Our apartment complex looks like it could be situated in some cold area such as New York, or Wisconsin or whatever. Here are some pictures shot from the patio of our apartment.

Photographers traditionally lugged bulky albums to deliver pictures to their clients. Designing New Fonts
I have been experimenting online on Fontstruct.com in a bid to build my own font. Here is the first one I created. It is kinda amateurish and has few rough edges. I hope to set them right when I design my next font. For now my request to readers is to visit the site and if you think it is good vote for it, so I get good rankings on the website.

One stop shop for your flooring needs...
Home improvement, and upgrades are commonplace in the entire United States. Most homes are built with carpet, vinyl, tile, or Hardwood Floor. Home owners often feel the need to replace or upgrade the floors once every few years. Some floors last longer while others don't. Whatever the case maybe one needs to find a reliable company which will execute the job to your fullest satisfaction.
In the past few years that I have lived in the US I have noticed that many people do their flooring themselves. They rip apart the carpeting and install hardwood floors, or else they take the hardwood out and install granite or ceramic tiles.
There are several companies in the country offering these services but what makes Sears Home Services different from all of them is their quality of material and great customer service. This is one organization where they place value on the customer's convenience, time and budgets. Once you place the order they will designate one of their executives as a project coordinator to help you.
It is the project coordinator's responsibility to help you from beginning to end. They help you choose the perfect floor for your home and keep your job on track. The job will be executed by Licensed Sears flooring contractors who are experts in installing laminate, granite, tile, ceramic, vinyl, or hardwood flooring or carpeting quickly and safely.
If you need some home remodelling or upgradation just get in touch with Sears Home Services and you can be assured of being taken care of.

Bizzare News: American Woman stores husband's body in Freezer
Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy
The above video is of a news clip I found online. Apparently this woman kept her husband's body in the freezer so that she could continue to claim his old age pension and live off it. She reportedly expressed remorse about her act when she was near death herself. Now both are deceased and this news has gone viral on the internet.
Wonder why people have to resort to such means for basic survival in the world's richest nation, i.e. United Sates of America??? I still don't understand this.
Safe, Secure, Private and Elegant online group interaction platform!
This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of YapTime. All opinions are 100% mine.
Almost everyone who uses the internet is on some social networking platform. Most of the social networking site users are not happy because of high advertising, low security, undesirable friend requests, and too much clutter on these sites.
Into this space comes a new service which is safe, secure, elegant and allows users to maintain privacy of their identities and groups. This platform known as YapTime is a platform that enables social groups to interact via private YapRooms, where members could discuss, share pictures, videos and plan events using group calendars.
If a website offered so much good stuff, it can't be free! No YapTime is a free service, it is one platform where you can be assured that you will not receive any pseuto 'friend' requests. This is a super secure clutter-free site too so you don't have to worry about your data falling into wrong hands.
Families, friends, and corporate teams share the platform and interact productively on YapTime. The site was launched only in 2010 and is headquartered in Boulder, CO. Some of the highlights of YapTime include: Seamless discussions, advanced security, photo and video sharing within private groups, simple and elegant user-friendly platform. The best feature is perhaps the privacy feature that makes it impossible for people who are not in your group to see you or your content.

Indians Celebrate Republic Day 2011

Today is a proud day for billions of Indian's across the world. It is the day our nation became a Republic, formally entered the league of western democracies. It has been three years since I spent this momentous occasion in India. Few people remember this date here and fewer think about it....
