Money, wealth, riches, opulence, treasure, whatever the term one might use to describe the means of transaction in this world is often the cause of disputes between people. Money has the power to buy anything in this world... people joke that "Those who say money can't buy everything doesn't know where to shop". In the same parlance money makes best friends into worst enemies, and turns family into foes.

This is what has happened to the family of the late Civil Rights Activist Rev. Martin Luther King's family. His children have been fighting over his estate of papers, letters, property, and now even the bible he carried and his Nobel Peace Prize are in the dispute. I came across a news article about how the daughter and sons of the late hero are in court battling over the possession and ownership of the last two items mentioned above.

Sad but true children don't seem to care about their parent's legacy if it doesn't turn into money. I guess then money is what makes the world go round for these people.

Russian Tightrope Village

I watched a video about the universal pastime of a Russian Village on Bing. The video shows how a poor village has transformed itself into a prosperous model even though they don't have any land to cultivate or grow food crops. The village set amidst mountains has a secret formula. Its residents are tight rope walkers and that is how they make their living. At one time they were considered the best team in the whole of Soviet Union.

What interested me in the video particularly was the fact that this village though set in one of the developed nations and former super powers of the world, the infrastructure seems to be similar to villages in India. People don't seem to be as rich as one would expect. Probably this is because of socialistic economy. There are remote rural locales in India where people use frozen rivers (Zanskar, Lakakh), Burma Bridges, tight rope, etc, but these were are tools for survival. Unfortunately the people in Indian villages never thought of marketing their skills else I am pretty sure those villages could have developed too.... and once developed I am sure the skills that brought them the prosperity would have been forgotten.

Money found in drainage

Ever heard of money being found in drains? Well it is unbelieveable but true and it happened in Israel where a sewage treatment plant workers found about 7,000 shekels currency all in 200 shekel bills. The bills stank of sewage but who cares, money is money and the find became national news and even attracted global media coverage.

Reading about the incident on Dallas Morning News I wondered who the money belonged to. Whether it belonged to an individual who lost it or some criminal who flushed it down the drain to avoid capture. But 7,000 shekels is a lot of money, about US$2,000 to be precise. A sum that could probably create livelihoods for few people in sub-Saharan Africa or even in India.

I wonder how people just throw money like that. It only shows absolute contempt for money. Hope whoever flushed it down the drain is regretting the action.
